BioAt the time of Alexander the Great, there existed the concept of oikouménē (Ecumene), meaning literally "the inhabitated world," this being as opposed to the world's uncivilized sectors. "Ecumene" is understood to be an improvement upon its natural opposite. Alexander put this concept into practice by unifying Greece, the Near East, the Indus Valley, Central Asia and Egypt. He then appointed himself as their collective guardian from the barbarians who still resided without.
